By participating in the 7½ Project, the artist, Hong Sanghyun observed the streets comprised of ironworks in Mullae-dong at sunset during August and September 2015, and captured pictures of objects with his camera. In the course of his work in the Mullae-dong ironworks block – while the camera shutter is open (although the film may have been exposed, of course) – he felt the boundary between day and night, the sunset, the street light of the dark night touching his skin, and found, at that moment, that the metal fragments of Mullae-dong alley also received the light, which led him to think once more about the ‘gelatin silver print’ that he learned about a decade ago when he first encountered the medium of photography. In other words, through this exhibition, he tried to reproduce metal with metal. If he thought only of vague one-dimensional objects such as a spoon, or a coin corresponding to the idea of metal when he first encountered photography a decade ago, now, and not compared to the past, he could feel the moment of the ‘direct’ experience of metallicity touching his skin as a substance.
