The fourth of 7 1/2: Cryptographic Imagination is the exhibition of Sulki & Min, graphic designers. They will choose visual exposure and concealment as their general theme of the works displayed this time. The works as a means of communication deteriorated into obstacles through removing or striping of the clues needed for the interpretation of the conventionalized and encoded visual elements.

Concept Drawing 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 9

Digital printing on fabric, 210 x 180 cm each, 2016

Concept Drawing is on the extension of Infra-flat, Sulki & Min’s previous work. ‘Infra-flat’ is a term developed to describe a situation where causality flows in the opposite direction in that a sense of reversed depth is created instead of when a pressing force to flatten the world exceeds a certain limit. Concept Drawings are based on the sample charts provided by Concept Drawing, a chart-drawing program. The large banners in the exhibition space can be seen from the pie chart displaying the social facts – or possibly fabricated ones – such as the consumption of gasoline, budget allocation, and income sources when we see it at an excessively close distance.

Gray Letters

Offset printing on paper, eight sheets, 29.7 x 21 cm each, 2016

Part of the security patterns used in envelopes is scanned, reduced, and rearranged to create writing paper appearing to be a grey noise field. Each element of the pattern is meticulously arranged so that it may not be regularly repeated.

These won’t Melt

These six plain white badges don’t convey any messages. They won’t melt, either. (Dedicated to David Hammons)
