Sekolah Pagesangan (SP) is a learning community aiming to empower a village community in Wintaos Hamlet, Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta-Indonesia. Founded in 2008, it is not a formal school, neither is it related to any non-formal educational government programs or projects. SP’s activities and learning processes are carried out in response to and in service of the community.
SP is organised into three groups (women’s, children’s, and youth/cadre groups). Each of them determines their own learning process needs, internalising and carrying out contextual education through activities where group members discover themselves and their potential.
Community empowerment is central to SP’s learning process, and efforts are directed towards mutual aid, self-help, and fundraising. One such effort is the Kedai Sehat Pagesangan (KSP), a joint business venture composed of small business groups initiated by women in the community. KSP aims to both increase family incomes, as well as raise funds for SP’s programs.
SP’s other self-help efforts include programs such as non-soy tempeh workshop classes, Gunungkidul cuisines classes, and classes on food and agriculture literacy carried out through live-in programs and workshops related to contextual education.
The general public are invited and encouraged to follow the development of these programs. Donations of time, thoughts, energy, and funds; as well as mutual assistance from SP members, volunteers, and sympathisers; are essential to Sekolah Pagesangan.
