The second exhibition of 7 1/2: Cryptographic Imagination proposes objects, poems and sounds. Works made of the various objects that the late poet Chan Kyung Sung (1930-2013) found on the streets, 103 poems from his collection of one-syllable word poems, Sun, and 18 poems from his Screw series are installed in and around the Project 7 1/2 space in Jongno 3-ga. As viewers discover the late poet’s work tucked away in the various corners of the neighborhood, they are also led to the fundamental question of where the boundary lies between art and non-art. The late poet’s son, Kiwan Sung, himself a poet, selected the 103 poems from Sun at random, and converted them into artificially digitalized voices. He plays them back repeatedly on 5.1 channel speakers in and around the Project 7 1/2 space under the title Poems without Footnotes. The digital voices combine consonants and vowels extracted from the voice recordings of the late poet and Kiwan Sung. The voice of the father joins the voice of the son in a random reading of the 103 poems.
